OBD-2 Hardware

OBD is the abbreviation for “On Board Diagnostics” and was introduced first in California, USA. The main puropose used to be smog reduction. Since 1996 OBD-2 is in place and describes the features of the normed OBD connection plug, data assignments of the 16 pins of the plug, protocols (SAE J1850 PWM, SAE J1850 VPW, ISO 9141-2, ISO 14230 KWP2000, ISO 15765 CAN) for signalling and messaging format. It is a standard connection port to the cars electronic control unit.
